TAMPA — Scott Effross’ road back from Tommy John surgery has been delayed by a procedure on a different part of his body.
The Yankees reliever underwent back surgery in December, manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday, which will delay his availability until some point this summer.
Effross underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2022, which caused him to miss all of the 2023 season, but he was hoping to have a normal spring training this year.
Instead, the back issue crept up on him late in the fall, Boone said, and after trying to work through it he eventually needed the surgery.
“So that set [his Tommy John rehab] back a little bit,” Boone said. “He’s begun his throwing program, I think last week, but it’s a little convoluted because you’re finishing off Tommy John [rehab] and then you throw the back into the mix. It’ll be a slow ramp-up.”
With Effross on the shelf — the Yankees placed him on the 60-day injured list Wednesday — there is at least one bullpen job to be won this camp, which could open the door for someone like Ron Marinaccio to make the team.

The Yankees originally acquired Effross from the Cubs at the 2022 trade deadline.
The 30-year-old right-hander, who is under contract through 2027, posted a 2.13 ERA across 13 appearances that season before suffering a torn UCL and needing Tommy John surgery on the eve of the 2022 playoffs.
Jose Trevino recently suffered a strained calf during his ramp-up for spring training, Boone said, which will force him to miss “the first couple weeks” of Grapefruit League games.
The manager said he still expected Trevino to be ready for the start of the regular season.
Trevino did some light agility drills on a back field Wednesday and has already been running and doing catching drills, per Boone.
“Responding really well, so he’ll just be a little slow,” Boone said.
The Yankees continued to add to their bullpen depth on Wednesday, trading for lefty reliever Clayton Andrews from the Brewers and re-signing veteran reliever Lou Trivino to a $1.5 million major league deal with a $5 million club option for 2025.
The 2025 salary has the potential to increase (as high as $6 million) depending on how many games he pitches in 2024, per The Post’s Joel Sherman.
The 5-foot-6 Andrews had recently been designated for assignment but landed with the Yankees in exchange for 19-year-old right-hander Joshua Quezada.
The lefty, who has two minor league options remaining, posted a 2.53 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 57 innings at Triple-A last year.
The Yankees had non-tendered Trivino in November but brought him in for a physical on Wednesday morning before finalizing his contract later in the day.

The righty is still rehabbing UCL surgery from last May and won’t be a potential factor for the Yankees at least until this summer.
After coming over in the Frankie Montas trade, Trivino posted a 1.66 ERA in 25 games with the Yankees in 2022.
To make room for Trivino on the 40-man roster, the Yankees put Jasson Dominguez (also recovering from Tommy John surgery) on the 60-day IL.
Trivino is likely to join him there, which would open another spot on the 40-man roster.
Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes and Marcus Stroman all threw live batting practice sessions at the club’s player development complex on Wednesday. Gerrit Cole is set to throw a bullpen session on Thursday.
